New York is AWESOME!
Summer's Review: 5 Stars! The people are SO NICE, Manhattan is BEAUTIFUL, there's never a dull moment (ALWAYS something to do), there's SO MUCH VARIETY IN EVERYTHING, and honestly- even though New York has a bad rep for being dangerous, I feel safer here than I do in Miami and LA combined. There are always people around, everywhere. The lights are always on (which necessarily might not be a good thing, but for me it was pretty magical). The scenery is, well, STUNNING. And there isn't just one type of it, either- YOU CAN FIND EVERYTHING IN NEW YORK. The ocean, the park, downtown... almost every type of scenery you can think of. THE FOOD IS GREAT (and no one can match the abundance of it).
The only thing I can say that might deter anyone from going is: prepare to walk. Hard. Do not bring shoes you wouldn't find comfortable after 2 hours of being on your feet.
Ok... before anyone asks "Where are the pictures?" I just want you to know that I am still presently IN New York and am waiting an hour til 4AM when I have to take the cab to Laguardia for my flight home. I could sleep, but I'll be doing enough of that on the plane and I need to use my time wisely since my schedule for the upcoming week is pretty insane, so I decided to write. FYI:
Monday (today)
3PM Arrive in LA
3:30PM Drive to work
1AM Finish work, go home.
Tuesday, Wednesday, AND Thursday
8AM Wake up, get ready for internship
9AM Drive to internship
10AM-3PM Internship
3PM-MIDNIGHT Work
Friday
6:30AM Wake up, get ready for work
7AM Drive to work
5PM Finish work, drive to airport
6:50PM Take flight to next trip
Pretty rough, huh? *sigh* The lazy girl inside me is crying. That's why I decided that I should tell you a little about my New York trip now (since it's still fresh in my mind anyway) and LATER, when I get back from my trip next weekend, continue the story and post some pictures.
Actually, I think I'll only be able to tell you about my first day for now.
Ready? Set- GO.
Thursday
Flight to Phoenix:
-Sit between ambiguous Brooklinite Mark with a sensitive side and Anthropolitic Scientist/Catholic Dave on a mission to prove the world is not 6,000 yrs old.
-Mark tells me I will love East Village. He gives me great pointers on where to go.
-Dave teaches me the ultimate way to do Sudoko. It's a numbers game that newspapers & magazines are picking up to replace the usual crossword puzzle. VERY ADDICTIVE. Angel, I suggest you give it a try.
-We start to discuss our desires to help the homeless and eventually agree to meet up when we all get back to LA with Dave's church for some great volunteer work.
Flight to Maryland:
-Boring and uneventful
Flight to Laguardia Airport, NYC:
-It's only an hour connection so we get a small heli-plane flight. I sit next to an active Marine officer who is going home to surprise his dad on his birthday. Very nice. He had a "Learn Tagalog" book with him because he wanted to live in the Philippines. Weird, huh? He also gave me some pointers on where to go in NY.
-Took great photos of NY from the plane.
NYC 1st Day:
-Cabbie who took me to Dave's apartment was very nice. He went an extra 20 minutes out of the way for free to show me Time Square. HOW BEAUTIFUL!
-David and I rush to the Festival's Opening Day party. I get my first taste of the New York streets (Dave lives in the part of Manhattan called East Village). We see NYU, the subway (OH MY GOD HOW AWESOME IS THAT?!) and rush to the club that's holding the event.
-BTW: WALKING. EVERYWHERE. THATS ALL I HAVE TO SAY.
We get to the club and meet up with Peter (who came the day before) and start to mingle with Film Industry/Music/Art types, promoting our film and having a great time. There were two levels to the club and a huge stage, and every single inch of it that night was full of display booths for all of the filmmakers who wanted to push market their screening. (We didn't get a booth because it was *gasp* $600-$3,000 for one). THERE WERE SO MANY FILMS!! As I sold our film I grabbed flyers for some I wanted to check out:
"The Gift of Barong"
A documentary about 2 Filipino-Americans who grew up in the states and were trying to go back to their roots. I met with the filmmakers (all filipino-Americans) and they were so awesome. Some of them were from LA and I exchanged numbers with them so we could meet up when we all got back.
"Getting My Child Back: Fight Autism"
A documentary about a man who explored the world of autism after his son was diagnosed(spelling?) with it. I was a little iffy about that- the guy seemed a little strange to me but I decided I had to see it.
"Grace Quigley"
A KATHARINE HEPBURN FILM!!!! OMG!!! It was the first ever "writer's cut" of any film, and the writer himself handed the flyer to me. Apparently he didn't like the original version of the film and decided to take matters into his own hands. I'm not too sure how I feel about that idea.
Afterwards David (the best tour guide ever, btw) took us to a great restaurant (I'll give you the name later- Dave's asleep right now and I don't want to make a lot of noise looking for the card). I had some SLAMMIN Garlic chicken and got a taste of an authentic Tuna Melt from Dave's plate while Pete's chicken curry was to die for.
Then we went to this awesome bar (again, names later) that had a lounge in the back with red velvet victorian couches, matching walls, ang golden chandeliers and we had a couple drinks and talked. It's nice to see Dave again. (Geez- it's been what, like 2 1/2 years? So you know there was some 'catching up' chatting that needed to be done.)
Well by then you can imagine it was like 4am, and we all had early mornings the following day, so we decided to head back to Dave's apartment.
TO BE CONTINUED...
Next week = tune in for the rest of my New York trip and see some pics! For now, though, I think I'll rest a bit. Night all! See you in LA! :)

20 Somethings
They call it the 'Quarter-life Crisis'. It is when you
stop going along with the crowd and start realizing
that there are many things about yourself that you
didn't know and may not like. You start feeling
insecure and wonder where you will be in a year or
two, but then get scared because you barely know where
you are now. You start realizing that people are
selfish and that, maybe, those friends that you
thought you were so close to aren't exactly the
greatest people you have ever met, and the people you
have lost touch with are some of the most important
ones. What you don't recognize is that they are
realizing that too, and aren't really cold, catty,
mean or insincere, but that they are as confused as
you. You look at your job... and it is not even close
to what you thought you would be doing, or maybe you
are looking for a job and realizing that you are going
to have to start at the bottom and that scares you.
Your opinions have gotten stronger. You see what
others are doing and find yourself judging more than
usual because suddenly you realize that you have
certain boundaries in your life and are constantly
adding things to your list of what is acceptable and
what isn't. One minute, you are insecure and then the
next, secure. You laugh and cry with the greatest
force of your life. You feel alone and scared and
confused. Suddenly, change is the enemy and you try
and cling on to the past with dear life, but soon
realize that the past is drifting further and further
away, and there is nothing to do but stay where you
are or move forward. You get your heart broken and
wonder how someone you loved could do such damage to
you. Or you lie in bed and wonder why you can't meet
anyone decent enough that you want to get to know
better. Or maybe you love someone but love someone
else too and cannot figure out why you are doing this
because you know that you aren't a bad person. One
night stands and random hook ups start to look cheap.
Getting wasted and acting like an idiot starts to look
pathetic. You go through the same emotions and
questions over and over, and talk with your friends
about the same topics because you cannot seem to make
a decision. You worry about loans, money, the future
and making a life for yourself... and while winning
the race would be great, right now you'd just like to
be a contender! What you may not realize is that
everyone reading this relates to it. We are in our
best of times and our worst of times, trying as hard
as we can to figure this whole thing out.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US!!!!!

The Washington Mutual Way of Life
IRA - an individual retirement account which lets you set aside tax-advantaged savings toward the time that you retire, savings which slowly and steadily grow to assume much higher levels than the original invested amount.
Longterm Investment - a series of portfolio-based purchases towards small stock percentages that, though prone to regular fluctuations along side the market, develops and grows your base supply with palpitating force.
401K - the thingy you get from work.
*sigh*
My mother is great, and I hope one day I will understand half of what she understands about the world... but I don't get this stuff ONE BIT.
That's why I'll just focus my energy on becoming rich and famous.
Random Thoughts:
- My cat doesn't know it, but seeing her sick makes me very sad.
- I will never name my daughter 'Sally' or 'May' so as to show those &*#%$ at SallieMae how offended I am at my oweing them money.
- On another issue, I would like to thank SallieMae for being there when I needed money to pay for my college.
- If all goes well, and I save up enough money, I think I will reward myself with a holiday trip to Europe. Roundtrip tickets for Sept 1st- Oct 1st are only $700 at Expedia.com! Who's with me?

It's been a strange few weeks.
I'll break it up into two acts, so as to make cohesive the jumble of the last few days.
ACT ONE: Moving on up.
There has been an unexpected wave of possibilities washing over the Filmmaker House. I guess after our 1 year anniversary everybody decided that the freshmen period of life in LA was over. Andy got a job as a director's assistant/behind-the-scenes person for an upcoming feature film (http://thetribemovie.blogspot.com/). Peter is shopping around for production jobs, and may soon be waving farewell to life at E!.
Luis and Miska's show has had some success. Luis is now the rising star at his weekly improv, and the steady stream of good reviews doesn't seem to be slowing. Miska is waiting for a callback from the producers of the show 'Lost' for a possible reacurring role.
And me?
I've snatched up an internship. It's at Underground Films (www.undergroundfilms.net), a small, successful production company that produces feature films and represents the best and brightest of the upandcoming scriptwriters in the industry. In May they start production at Warner Brothers Studios on the new film "License to Wed" starring Robin Williams and Mandy Moore. They also have their hands in a new Chuck Palahnuik film, as well as a teen thriller set to star Mischa Barton. My roll there is as scriptreader and office support. Already I have 3 scripts to read over the weekend (homework), and I am gobbling them up without swallowing- pausing only for fresh air and rocky road ice cream.
I love it.
I've also obtained another job... a sort of 'modeling' job you could say. I'll tell you about that later.
Lastly- After much hesitation and many a sleepless night I have finally begun writing my script. Armed with the silver pen Mommy gave me and my precious friend 'Failure' (c/The Artist's Way) goading me into defeat, I go swimming through the uncharted depths of my creativity.

ACT TWO:And then there were 4.
Namely: everyone has left. First we had a visitor (Rikka! Miska's cousin, who's been here before and decided to come again due to a 'leave of absence' from work), and that was lots of fun because she was much needed feminine company. For a week it was bliss. Then, early on a quiet Wednesday morning, she left.
On that same Wednesday Christian's 3 months of english schooling finished- so, after a boastful round of golf at Griffith Park, he left.
Not to be beaten, on Saturday, due to a failing immigration system and the opportunity to start filming his documentary of 'The Tribe' in Costa Rica, Andy left.
And so here we are. The Filmmaker House. The fridge is bigger, the hallways echo, and those of us left feel the loss of old friends.

We need a new roommate.
And me?

HAPPY 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY FILMMAKER HOUSE!!!!
It's been 1 year! April 1st- 1 year TO THE DAY that we signed our lease and our lives away to the Hollywood dream. Time does fly. We at the Filmmaker House decided the occasion was fit for a celebration, so we held our first 2006 Saturday Night BarBQ followed with the premiere of our roadtrip-to-california documentary "At All Costs- A Strength in Numbers Story."

The Gods and Goddess of the Filmmaker House

My Gift to the House- an upgraded grill!
Luis and I went to Ralph's earlier in the day to prepare. And at Ralph's we found IT. THE STEAK. 12 pounds of big, fat, meaty mess.

An $8 steak... it's bigger than Luis' face. Remember the size of the $47 filet mignon?
. . .

Of course we bought it.
The night was a festivous miracle. We drank, we sang, we ATE, and we got it all down on camera.

Baked Potatoes

We had to cut the big one in half just to cook it- thank god for Christian!
Eating THE STEAK

We ended the night by reminiscing. The documentary was HILARIOUS- it was nice seeing all of the places we've been, all the things we've seen, and all the hopes we had. It was also great to see Darryl's face again :)
We finished it all with some scrumptous Apple Pie a la mode (thanks Luis!) and more memories.

*sigh*
So much has changed in the past year. And yet- so much has stayed the same:

A NIGHT AT THE LODGE WITH MY E! FOLK

Professionalism Abounds
Friday night to me is a blur. The E! Gods found it within their means to reward the minions by paying for a night out on the town, so we in International Operations decided to have some steaks at The Lodge. How fun! I had my first taste of martinis, in the form of a "Snow Bunny," "Chocolate Martini," & "Raspberry Cheesecake Martini." After that I don't remember much...

The glue that holds it all together...

Blasted

A $47 filet mignon.

Raven, Andrea, and Stephen

Grace and Shivaune

Me and James' beautiful fake smile.
I was told that when the waitor came to announce the desserts my response was "Can we just have everything?"

so they said yes...
Ok... montage...

Stephen & Grace with luscious lips thanks to Victoria's Secret

I have no idea what is going on here...

The gals
Again- so fun! The people I work with are awesome... not bad for my first job in California, huh?

As I mentioned before, Luis works with me at E! now. And since both of us are active (or at least wanna-be active) artists with better things to do during the day, my awesome boss Bryan said we could work nights. It's been great. I think I was born to work later hours- the energy I have at 9pm is a complete turn around from the tiredness I usually feel working at 9am. Plus, I get more personal/creative work done during the day at home so that I'm less stressed when I get into the office. (My new hours are 4pm-1am)
Free Day Hours + Productive Summer = Better Employee
I even said no to the promotional jobs because of this new schedule. Of course, I have a feeling it was a ploy from Bryan to get me to stay, but if so then he's a smart one- cuz it worked!
So, during lunch hours (since nobody is there to see us be silly) Luis and I have taken to playing around with my camera.

Don't worry Bryan- we're just playing!

The music wall.

Working hard...

Heather even joined us! (NO- she doesn't dress like that everyday... she had a thing to go to and was just stopping by).
But it's not always all fun at work. Friday night we had an issue with an E! News Weekend show and I had to stay until 4 in the morning to fix it. AND I found out from Luis later on that I didn't even fix it correctly and he got calls until 8am to do more. :(
Luis's car also ran out of batteries so I had to jump start it. At 4 in the morning. In 60 degree weather.

Luis and my jumper cables getting to know each other.
But all that is worth it considering the work I'm getting done during the day. I had the time last week to design the flyers, programs, posters, and billboards for Miska & Luis' One Person Shows. Regularly I would wake up, go to work, come home and sleep... but now with these new hours I'm like some creative machine!

Me and the Billboard I designed. THOUSANDS of people see these billboards EVERYDAY!
I put so much energy into the designs I did that Miska & Luis' publicist Cheryl said she would distribute my business card to all of her contacts... she said I had "great quality work and could make a pretty penny on the side" doing this. That really got me syked, because Cheryl has been a publicist in LA for like 20-30 years and if SHE likes my stuff than that MUST mean it's good.
'Greetings from Cloud 9' opened this Sunday. What it is is Miska & Luis' One Person Shows combined with a common central theme (the American Dream). I'm like Miska & Luis' PA... I'm the box office girl, then the theater usher, then I go on stage and do the intros, the intermission entertainment, and the finale. They've been working REALLY hard on getting this together, so we were all pretty excited Sunday, and the tension was a little high.
I can't show you any pics JUST YET of the show because I don't have the rights, but I snuck in a couple:

Miska backstage doing the lights.

Wined & Dined for the celebration reception.

Everybody. (God I'm short.)
And afterwards, since we didn't have any time before, we put up the billboards.

And the big finale:

Isn't that cool?
As a celebration Miska and I spent the night at the Tonga Hut tiki bar on Victory. It's a cool place. We had our drinks paid for 3 TIMES by 3 seperate people! And I met a Filipino who was just about to make his 3rd trip THIS YEAR back to the Philippines. And another guy who, while he was in the service, traveled to every continent in the world. It really reminded me about my desire to travel. If I could, my dream would be to stop working and just live my life traveling the world.
Random Thoughts:
-My cat is cute. She never goes more than 10 feet away from me at all times. She's actually sitting behind me right now just staring at me.
-My fear of failure is the ultimate writers block.
-I could work nights forever.
-I can't not eat chocolate at least once a day.
-Harry Potter rocks.
-Peter has the weirdest toys.
